What Is Pinging? Pinging is in basic terms a technique you can use as a blogger to notify other sites when you have posted a new article to your site.
There are many sites such as http://technorati.com/ and http://blogflux.com/ which call themselves ‘blog news sites’, they list the lasted blogs posts from around the world. These sites have categories filled with blog posts submitted to them from other bloggers websites.
When you ‘ping’ sites such as these you are letting such websites know that you have added a new post to your blog so that they can add your post to their lists.
Pinging can be done as a manual process, you can use sites such as hxxx://pingshark.com and http://autopinger.com/ to ping blog news sites. This is a simple process which involves filling out a short form about your blog when you have made a new post, then hitting the submit button. Within seconds you have let the major blog news sites know about your new post.
As you explore these blog news sites and other peoples blogs you will probably realize there is a awful lot of sites out there to tell about your new posts. This is where auto update comes in. Imagine having to manually ping all those websites every time you posted a new article!
The pinging process can be made ten times easier with some clever use of your blogging software. Most blogging software supports auto update in some form, since I am using word press and it is so popular I will gear these instructions towards word press.
Visit your WP control panel (http://yourblog.com/wp-admin) and check out the writing tab under settings. In here towards the bottom of the options you will find an Update Settings section. In here you can add (line seperated) URL’s you want your blogging software to ping each time you add a new article to your site. This will be done automatically and can save you loads of time!
So now if I want to ping technorati when I make a new post all I have to do it put http://rpc.technorati.com/rpc/ping on a new line in the update settings box.
